The Bonder And The Blind Mare

This post appeared on my Horses Discussion List: :

"Believe it or not the mare in this picture is blind and ridded on a regular basis. The bonder does wonders before it she would not even let you get on her back."

Naturally I wrote the poster, Mike Fagel in Indiana, and asked for the story so that I could add this page to my site and share the story.

Mike Fagel's response:

This horse( Slush) is a (90%) blind App mare that Is owned by the Indiana Hoved Animal Humane Society. She was donated by a lady who told us that the horse had dragged her around the arena several times, had tied to push her through the fence and she did not want to deal with her in foal.

She foaled and after 20 hours of walking and getting her to learn the find the foal and not step on it she was fine. when she weaned the foal we separated the two the foal staying at one farm the mare coming to me.

I did the bonder with her on a lead line and using the line as a guide along with voice commands in 1 hour she was lowering her head and following our voice around the round pen. My next step was to saddle and ride her she has a different gait she feels the ground as she walks, but she can even gallop if she trusts the rider and understands the commands. This horse was once a 4-H horse and knew what to do just not who to trust and how with the help of the bonder and a little luck we accomplished a lot."

Never under-estimate blind horses and far-sighted people.
